Subject: (?) Airport Frequencies for San Francisco
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I'm going to be visiting San Francisco in the next couple of days, and I
would like to get the control tower frequencies for the San Francisco
International Airport. Unfortunately I don't have the "Police Calls" book
for the Western USA, and I can't pick one up at the local Radio Shack (I
live in Alabama).
If someone out there happens to have these frequencies, I'd sure appreciate
it if you'd e-mail them to me. I'm taking my HT, and since I'll be staying
close to the airport, I'd like to tune in while I'm there and listen to
what's going on.
Thanks in advance.

To subscribe to the boatanchors maillist send Email to:
boatanchors-request@gnu.ai.mit.edu.
The boatanchors maillist is for the discussion of vacuum-tube
radios and related amateur radio equipment. It does not
have to be very old or very heavy.

Subject: Followup: Was this a bad idea?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
A few days ago, I posted my article "Was this a bad idea?".
It dealt with the fact that I had witnessed a rather horrid accident.
The people involved were in jeopardy of losing their lives, and we
were at least 2 to 3 miles from a house. I, while unlicensed,
used my HT to call someone on the repeater and get emergency out there
fast. They did, and the matter was thankfully resolved with no one
being permanently injured.
Many of you were kind enough to email me you opinions, which all said
almost the same thing: Yes, it probably WAS illegal, but who would
complain?
To answer the q's proposed to me during the email barrage:
(1) Yes, the situation was life-threatening.
(2) Even if I knew I would face prosecution, and some ham-lawyer
was listening, I would have one it anyways
(3) No one was upset I did that
(4) No one ever questioned my actions
(5) It was never brought up on the network, or the repeaters.
I still feel good that I did something to save a life, though I could
have faced prosecution. However, that never crossed my mind once
during the whole ordeal. I stayed long enogh to give my witness
report, and then we left the scene.
This article has prompted me to get a debate going with some ham friends
(now that I just received my license in the mail today!) about
this, and the particular issue of the ham using the police frequencies
to get help for his friend out in CA(I believe?).
Again, thanks for all of you emailing me. I was supported all the way,
and that's all I feel was necessary.

Actually, we don't pay anything for our licenses here; the under-$6 fee
is charged by the VECs (the organizations giving the tests) to cover
handling costs for the paperwork. And some VECs don't charge anything
at all. The FCC doesn't get a cent for ham licenses at this point.
There is a proposal for "vanity" calls, which would cost $7 a year
(actually $70 up front for the 10-year license), but that's not in
effect yet.

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
My Tech no-code license was processed April 26. "Great", I thought,
"I'll be expecting it Tuesday or Wednesday." Those days came and went.
Each day, I was even more and more upset. I actually had to go
places those days, and wanted the opportunity to take my HT with
me and program repeaters to hit along the way.
Friday, I didn't get to bed until 6:30 a.m. Late night working
on an article for a magazine. Again, before going to bed, I said
to myself "Oh, it COULD come today(Friday). It will. ON the night
when I"ll have to go work at that crummy bar and babysit
overgrown children, I'll get my license." (I'm a bouner at a bar -
the weekends hold nothing but dread and woe for me)
May 6, 1994: 1:30 p.m. EST. I trudge out to my mailbox and
said "Look straight up into the sky. Don't look in the box first."
I pulled out 3 letters. One small one, which was a hotel reservation
confirmation card, a standard sized one, which was a bank statement,
and then one that said it all: FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION
I ripped that sucker open after running back into my apartment.
I sat down at my desk and saw the callsign: KB8SGL
"Well", I sighed, "the callsign is different from what I thought, but
hey, who cares? I'M LICENSED!"
I fired up three repeaters calling N8JJQ, Tim Porter, hoping
he'd be online. No dice. Finally, I resigned myself to fate:
No Tim! And I'm DYING to make my FIRST contact!
I went to 146.88 and said "KB8SGL listening."
Silence. Then...
"I didn't catch it all," he said, and I KNEW who it was! John!
N8IUM!
"but it *sounded* like SGL? This is N8IUM."
I sputtered "John! I've been listening to you for months! N8IUM!!"
We chatted. He asked about my class for the license, how long it took,
and who was there, etc. Then, KB8RSC cut in. Brian!
A guy who knew me from local bulletin boards. I was talking
to two hams at once. I couldn't keep up.
I thought after listening for months, I'd have it down pat. I'd know
how to handle myself. I was so excited I forgot to write down callsigns.
I didnt' even ask the right questions I promised myself Id' ask!
I was beyond ecstatic.
My HT, sadly, was starting to crackle. Even one of the best radios
can have interference from outside sources. I had to give them my
farewell, since I could barely hear them. I signed off, knowing
I had made my first contact. I'm thankful it was with an established
ham who was willing to give me a few minutes to get it all out.
Since I hadn't had my shower, and my apartment is horrible for
talking on this HT, I now sit at my terminal and type. As soon
as I'm done relaying this story, I'm going to finaly get my
shower, go outside(and a gorgeous sunny day it is!), and
talk without the appliances interfering.

Did you all enjoy that? I did. I sure like new hams, they haven't
been polluted and they are full of fire.
At first I kinda pooh-poohed the tech-lites... how could making a
repeater contact be as thrilling as making MY first qso on 15 meter cw?
Obviously it WAS!

Err, with a name like "Kensy-Rudick", I'm a little surprised her "dad" is
named Waugh.
I wonder if this is another permutation of the Shergold game?

My SWR curves were precisely what Cushcraft advertises the first time

tuned very nicely.
